Are large,high quality,fire opals,expensive to buy???
Why so??? and also ,what would say a 10 oz,super high quality fire opal stone cost from a jeweler???
Gems and minerals typically are expensive if they are rare to begin with (whether actual or artificual rarity), of good characteristic or clarity, flawless, of an unusual variety, or just plain interesting.
I'm not an expert on fire opal but prices on the open market for gems and minerals can vary wildely. I've seen dealers ask $120 for something that most people sell for $12 and $60 for something that can easily be had for $8. You really need to know your minerals to decide what is a fair price to pay.
You also need to decide if you want a rough specimen or a cut and polished specimen. Look around at a variety of places such as jewelry stores, eBay, fine gem and mineral dealers, and online rock shops to get an idea of prices.
